Photo sharing app Instagram finally allows users to shoot pictures in landscape mode

Instagram has added new layout options in addition to its signature square for pictures and videos in a bid to attract more advertisers and to stop users defecting to more flexible services such as Snapchat.
The move is the first major alteration to the photo-sharing, social media service since Facebook Inc bought it for $1 billion in 2012, and addresses the wishes of many of its 300 million users, who have been constrained by the square format.

“It boils down to giving advertisers and users more options,” said Debra Aho Williamson, a social media marketing and advertising analyst. “You want people to be able to see more of your ad. It’s something advertisers are definitely going to be interested in.”

One in five photos and videos posted on the service do not fit the square format, Instagram said in a blog post. “Friends get cut out of group shots, the subject of your video feels cramped and you can’t capture the Golden Gate Bridge from end to end,” it said.

From Thursday, Instagram’s web-based service and its mobile apps running on Google Inc’s Android system and Apple Inc’s iOS will allow portrait and landscape formats, giving both users and paying advertisers more options.

The move should help Instagram in its battle with newer rivals such as Snapchat for users in the fast-moving messaging and media-sharing market.

At the same time, it should attract more advertising revenue for Instagram, which said in June it would open its platform to all advertisers by the end of the year, rather than just to select brands.
Instagram is expected to generate nearly $600 million in advertising revenue by the end of this year and $2.8 billion in 2017, according to projections from research firm eMarketer.

By comparison Facebook, the world’s most popular online social network, generated more than $12 billion in revenue in 2014. The growing service hit one billion users in a single day for the first time on Monday.

To promote the new formats on Thursday, Walt Disney Co released exclusive footage of its upcoming film, “Star Wars, The Force Awakens,” using the new landscape option.

Asus to launch Zenfone Max and Zenfone Zoom at IFA; will launch 7 Zenfone models in 2016

Looks like Asus is on a roll as far as its Zenfone launches are concerned. According to company CEO, Jerry Shen, Asus plans to launch the Zenfone Zoom and Zenfone Max at the upcoming IFA technology show in Berlin.

Asus Zenfone Zoom comes with a 3x optical zoom. Zenfone Zoom will sport a 5.5-inch full HD display and come fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery. On the connectivity front, it supports 2G/3G/LTE 4G along with 802.11 ac, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth 4.0. It will also come with ZenUI built on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop. Whereas the Zenfone Max comes with a 5,000mAh battery.

According to Digitimes, the company also plans to launch around 6 to 7 Zenfone models in 2016 with a standard 5.5-inch display size. Shen said that Asus plans to launch one premium Zenfone Deluxe, two models of the Zenfone Laser, one Zenfone Selfie, one Zenfone Max and one or two Zenfone Go models.

Asus uses chipsets from companies such as Intel, Qualcomm and MediaTek. But according to Digitimes, China-based Spreadtrum Communications and HiSilicon Technologies have also approached Asus for CPU orders. The company expects to ship over 21 million smartphones in 2015 and 30-40 million in 2016, said Shen.

Asus had recently launched the Zenfone Deluxe, Zenfone 2 Laser and the Zenfone Selfie in the maiden Asus Zen Festival in India. Asus Chairman Johnney Shih had announced all these phones and had also given is a sneek peak into the Asus Zenfone Max, the 5,000mAh battery sporting phone.

Obi SF1 first impressions: An affordable smartphone with decent specifications

Aiming at the markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Obi Mobile has launched two new smartphones – SF1 and SJ1.5. SF stands for San Francisco and SJ for San Jose. We are at the event taking place in San Francisco and had the opportunity to spend some time with the device.

There are a few key observations in devices that Obi has launched today. For one, it’s called the Obi Worldphone. As per Obi, it’s a philosophy that it believes in fixing the gaps that exists in the smartphone market today.

To build better designed phones, it has worked with Ammunition Design Studio. And the result is a blend between a unibody with metallic accents and polycarbonate body in the SF1 and SJ1.5, respectively. Overall the device is quite light.

The design is refreshing. For those who’ve used a Lumia, would associate with a rectangular and curved edges. The SF1 also has a ‘floating display’ as Obi calls it. This refers to a raised screen compared to the bezel around it. This makes it easier to swipe across the screen.

The SF1 sports a 5-inch display with a layer of Gorilla Glass 4 protection. Obi has decided to go with just one home screen (instead of the app drawer), and then on the next screen you go to the menu.

On the camera front, it comes with a 13-megapixel rear snapper, Sony IMX214 Exmor sensor and hybrid auto focus that promises split-second focus in any light. The camera uses Qualcomm ChromaFlash camera feature to quickly snap two photos. Users can select their focus after taking a picture through the Qualcomm UbiFocus camera feature and zoom in at a resolution beyond normal digital zoom levels, with images powered by the Qualcomm OptiZoom camera feature. Preliminary use showed that the camera seemed to focus well under low light conditions, but we will need to test it properly to give a complete verdict.

It is a dual SIM device with support for 4G/LTE. It runs Android Lollipop. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor along with 2GB or 3GB of RAM. In terms of performance it felt fluid enough. But we need to see how it performs with several apps installed. Both SF1 and SJ1.5 also come loaded with apps such as AVG Anti-Virus app, Swiftkey, AccuWeather, Clean Master and ColorNote.

The SF1 also features Dolby Audio and Qualcomm Quick Charge 1.0 power management technology. The SF1’s 3,000mAh battery can charge to full power in less than three hours, claims Obi. However, we can confirm that only once we’ve got the device in our labs and conducted our battery tests.

The SF1 16GB model with 2GB RAM is priced at $199 (approx Rs 13,200) and the variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage costs $249 (approx Rs 16,500). The SJ1.5 is priced at $129 (approx Rs 8,600). Overall, the device appears to be a decent smartphone at an affordable price.

Images of BlackBerry Venice slider phone with Android OS leaked online

BlackBerry’s latest rumoured phone, the Android OS sporting slider phone, named Venice is already doing the rounds of the internet. Prolific tipster Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, had tweeted out details of the smartphone some days back. According to the latest image leaks from CrackBerry, one gets an idea of the placement of microSD card and SIM card slots.

Unlike the previous image leaks, this newest collection of images shows more details about the phone. You have a switched on phone with touchscreen as well as keyboard slide out avataar. The rear camera comes with a dual LED flash unit.

In terms of rumoured specifications, the BlackBerry Venice smartphone is said to sport a 5.4-inch QHD display with a 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution. It will be powered by a 1.8GHz hexa-core 64-bit Snapdragon 808 processor paired with 3GB RAM. The device will sport a dual-edge curved display and will come equipped with a 18MP rear camera along with a 5MP front facing camera.

According to Blass, the BlackBerry Venice is expected to launch in November on all US national carriers.

Delhi Police rolls out trial version of its ‘One Touch Away’ app

Delhi Police chief B.S. Bassi on Friday launched a trial version of the much-awaited mobile app “Delhi Police… One Touch Away” aimed at reducing public inconvenience and dissatisfaction with police functioning.

“Our endeavour has been to identify areas where newer means can help in reducing public inconvenience and consequent dissatisfaction with police functioning. One such area for the public is how to reach police in various situations,” Bassi said.

“The app will facilitate access to all services provided by Delhi Police with just one touch,” he said. The mobile app – currently available only for Android users via Google Play – will act as an umbrella to all the previous Delhi police mobile applications, websites and services.

A police statement said the user-friendly mobile app “not only provides contact details of police officers (dealing with the public) but also has provision to disseminate information (documents, photographs, audio or video) to various predefined groups in police”.

“Through this app, information like police advisories, traffic alerts, safety tips, missing people, wanted criminals and terrorists can be obtained with a single click.”

The app also lists police officers along with their contact numbers, designations and photographs.
A senior police official said that since the concept behind the app was to create a single platform for the convenience of the public, and as such it provides links to all police websites, apps (Lost Report, Traffic App, Himmat App) and other services.

“Laws and Acts like Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Information Technology Act, Motor Vehicle Act, in electronic form in daily use of police officials, Juvenile Justice Act, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Act, Arms Act, Copyright Act, Delhi Excise Act etc. are also listed on the mobile app,” he added.

Microsoft Lumia 950, 950 XL flagship smartphones surface online

New leaked press renders of upcoming Microsoft Lumia 950, 950 XL flagship smartphones have been spotted online. Thanks to Brad Sams and serial tipster Evan Blass, we have got a good look at the new smartphones dubbed Lumia 950 (Talkman) and Lumia 950 XL (Cityman) which are rumoured to launch at an event in October.

In terms of design, both devices sport a simple Windows logo on the back, just below the camera slot. The devices are presented in a blue and black color variant

The Lumia 950 codenamed ‘Talkman’ and the Lumia 950 XL with a codename ‘Cityman’ are premium phones. While earlier reports were pointing at an IFA launch, it is speculated that the company may avoid it as other products at the event may outshine Microsoft’s premium devices.

The Lumia 950 or Talkman will reportedly sport a 5.2-inch display with 2560 x 1440 pixels of resolution. Under the hood, one can expect a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor coupled with 3GB RAM, 20-megapixel rear snapper, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 32GB storage and a 3,000mAh battery.

The larger, 950 XL or Cityman, will come with a 5.7-inch display, and almost a similar set of specs. Apart from the larger display, some other differentiating specs will be an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor and a 3,300mAh battery.

Both smartphones will support Qi wireless charging and also an infrared scanner that will unlock the device in seconds. Though ZTE has already introduced the iris scanner, it is still not a commonly found feature and could turn out to become a USP of the device. Both will also feature USB Type-C and come dipped in Matte white or black polycarbonate.
